Broad-winged Damselflies, as their name suggests, have broader wings
than most damselflies. Iowa has four species of broad-winged damsels. All have a
metallic green, blue, or bronze color to at least parts of the body.
Jewelwings - Calopteryx
Jewelwings are metallic blue or green with black on the wings.
They have a fluttery flight.
Rubyspots - Hetaerina
Rubyspots are recognized by the bright red coloration at the base of
the wings. Red spots dancing over a moving stream is likely one of
these species.
