Iowa Common Clubtails

The Gomphus genus includes some of our coolest dragonflies.  Most are very colorful and have prominent clubs with varying yellow spots.  They may be found around both still and moving water although different species tend to have preferences.  Most are found in mid-summer.  Sulphur-tipped, Rapids, and Cobra are very rare and despite the moniker, none of these species can really be considered "common".  Others have more aptly named them "Wide-tipped Clubtails".
