Variable Darner - Aeshna interrupta lineata male lateral

Size: 2.9 in.

This dragonfly of the Northern Great Plains is rare in northwestern Iowa where it is at the southern limit of its range. It has not been observed mating or ovipositing so may appear only as a post-breeder in late summer. Look for it around lakes, ponds and streams.

The thoracic stripes on the western sub-species are fused while on the eastern form they are broken.  Midwestern bugs seem to run the gamut in this regard and you may find one that varies from side to side.
