The family Aeshnidae, or Darners, is represented by six
genera in Iowa. The mosaic darners have blue, green or
yellow thoracic stripes and abdominal spots on a dark background.
Green darners are represented by our most common species of this family.
Spotted darners have two yellow spots on the side of the thorax. The English name "darner" comes from the
long tapered body which reminded people of darning needles.
