Iowa Emeralds

Emeralds are some of the most sought dragonflies throughout much of the country.  Although Iowa does not have the number of species found in other areas, we have recorded seven members of this family representing three genera.  Others range close to northeast Iowa so who knows what more surveying might discover.

Baskettails - Epitheca

Baskettails are sometimes referred to by their sub-genus name and some authorities believe they are indeed two different genera.  Prince is also called Epicordulia while the smaller ones are called Tetragoneuria.

Shadowdragons - Neurocordulia

Striped Emeralds - Somatochlora
