Despite their common name, Bluets aren't always blue. Although
most are blue with varying configurations of black markings, we also
have orange, yellow, and multi-colored bluets. A few species are
only separable through careful examination in the hand. Some
species prefer moving water while others are content in the vegetation
surrounding ponds and lakes. This
group includes two different genera, Coenagrion and Enallagma
which are structurally similar. Both genera have the common name
Bluet. Iowa has 18 species of Bluets:
Eurasian Bluets - Coenagrion
American Bluets - Enallagma
