Many people who watch dragonflies can trace their initial interest back
to a member of the skimmer family. Most skimmers are fairly large
and showy and easily identifiable in the field. Skimmers love to
perch in the sun watching for prey to fly just a bit too close.
Even when it zips out to snatch a bug, it often returns to the same
perch. Iowa has 27 species of skimmers in the following genera:
