Iowa Gliders

Iowa gliders fall into two genera - Pantala and Tramea.

Rainpool Gliders - Pantala

Rainpool Gliders are found worldwide and the Wandering is truly a wanderer since it has been recorded on six continents.  This is also the dragonfly one is most likely to see in the office parking lot on a hot summer day as it explores the shiny surfaces of automobiles looking for a place to lay eggs.

Saddlebags - Tramea

Saddlebags are often found gliding over grassy fields and along country roads, sometimes quite a distance from water.  They are fairly large dragonflies.  The Carolina, common to our south, has been found in only area of the state.
