Iowa Meadowhawks

The confusing genus of Meadowhawks can be a lot of fun.  Mature males are pretty straightforward in identification, but most of the bugs you see are juveniles and females.  While many females are extremely difficult to identify, the beautiful golden juvenile males can be keyed out by using a hand lens.

There is still a lot of research to be done on the Sympetrum complex, especially Cherry-faced, White-faced, and Ruby which tend to interbreed a lot in many parts of the country.  Hybrids are certainly possible anywhere.
